High Falls Mercantile and Design On A Dime 2013

Design On A Dime came up fast and furious this year. The annual benefit for Housing Works draws large crowds of interior designers,  celebrities, media, and design enthusiasts. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of many of our vendors, I was able to create a room that reflected my deep appreciation for layers and layers of vintage and new pieces.  I could not have been more pleased with the end result.

Each year our vendors donate amazing products, private donors open their checkbooks, and the Housing Works staff works tirelessly to pull the event off without a hitch. I want to give a special shout out to Currey & Co, Dash and Albert, Vanguard Furniture, High Falls WallcoveringsHigh Falls Collection LTD, Shirley Serure Photography, Kahina Living, West Elm, Kevin Quinn, Downtown Antiques, and our private donors.

Thanks so much for your support. Happy Spring! Larry

American Made Pottery at High Falls Mercantile

One of my favorite additions to our mix here at High Falls Mercantile is without a doubt the pottery from Barbara Eigen. It’s versatile, fun, and best of all, made in the United States.

True to just about everything we carry here at HFM, I had to take this dinnerware for a test drive at home and let’s just say that Jeff and I were hooked instantly. I went with the cream to work in with my various vintage pieces but as you’ll see, it is available in a whole host of special order colors.  Here is a sampling of what there is to offer.  As always, if you have any questions you can contact us here and one of us will help you decide.

Happy Spring! Larry

Going Modern with High Falls Mercantile

One of the joys of being in the interiors and design business is getting to work with other designers and architects in helping them realize their vision.  Whether it’s selling pieces from the store or helping to style a house that’s going on the market, we’ve done it all.  I met Marica Mc Keel from Studio MM about a month ago here at High Falls Mercantile.  Marica was finishing up the details on the first of what will be five homes on 38 beautiful acres in Ulster County.  As the house was to be photographed by the talented Paul Warchol, Marica wanted a few final details attended to.  That’s where HFM came in.  Armed with pillows, lamps, poufs, and accessories I was able to help Marica complete her vision.  It’s a beautiful property that some lucky person will soon be calling Home.

PS If you have any questions regarding this house, you can e-mail Jeff by clicking Here.

Have a great Spring. Larry

American Made at High Falls Mercantile

As you might recall, last year we exhibited for the first time at the Architectural Digest Show in New York. It was a fun experiment and we took a lot away from it. One of the highlights was being across the aisle from  furniture maker Laron Algren from Ohio.  I fell in love with the integrity, beauty, and craftsmanship of his pieces and knew they would be a great fit for our ever-changing mix at High Falls Mercantile.  Here’s a snapshot of what we offer which I’m sure will grow and change as the year goes on. Enjoy! Larry

Seeing Red at High Falls Mercantile

Creating the annual High Falls Mercantile holiday window has become one of my favorite traditions. Not only does it allow my inner child come out to play with glue, tape, paper, staples, and drill it also allows me to create a “Holiday” feeling in not so traditional ways. This years window is no exception. Thank You for following us and have a wonderful holiday season. Larry

Inspired by Morocco

At High Falls Mercantile we cherish the relationships we develop with our  vendors. Katharine Phillips L’Heureux of Kahina Giving Beauty is one of those people. We have been carrying her organic Argan Oil from Morocco for a few years and just recently Katharine introduced us to some amazing home products that she found on one of her recent trips. Katharine’s own blog can be read Here.

Being a textile lover myself, it didn’t take much convincing to be the first store to carry the line. To make these pieces, aloe vera leaves are pounded and dried.   The fibers are pulled from the leaves and spun to make thread.  They are then dyed using all-natural dyes and woven with cotton, silk, and camel hair.

The color ways of each piece are rich and vibrant.

We love anything handmade, versatile, and durable.  Use them on the table, as a throw, a scarf, or just to add a punch of color to any room.

The hand stitching and application of the sequins  make the wedding blanket throws and pillows uniquely different. The wedding blankets are made in preparation for a wedding by the bride and her female relatives as an act of bonding before the wedding.  The blankets are adorned with sequins or beads and embroidered.  Traditionally, they are worn as a cape by the bride on the day of the wedding.

Thank You for checking out our latest post. We look forward to bringing you more unique and one of a kind items. Larry

Currey & Co: A New Collection

You might remember from a few posts back that I fell in love with Currey & Company lighting. (You can see that post Here.) After they donated so generously to my Housing Works window installations, I was pleasantly surprised to get a call  asking if they could use a familiar name or two for the new collection debuting at High Point. I obliged, and here they are.  Simple, Classic, and very High Falls Mercantile.

HFM at Chelsea Housing Works

I first moved to NYC in 1992 to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. Not long after, I discovered the Housing Works thrift stores. I was addicted. 20 years later I have my own retail store and still love shopping and designing windows. I had the opportunity to do the Housing Works Chelsea window last week and thought I’d share the results. On the heels of the Hell’s Kitchen window you will indeed see some similarities.  The Chelsea window however, has my heart.

Once again, we had amazing support from Currey & Co with their donation of the stunning chandelier and silvered Urn. Obrigado donated the beautiful Dragon pillows and One Kings Lane is responsible for the decadent gold glass bowl.

With both windows complete, I already find myself asking “What’s next?”
